Housing

Housing is a basic human right included in the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and we are actively advocating for housing solutions in Southeast Ohio. Our Executive Director Ari Faber and Programs and Organizing Manager Jamie Miller went to Columbus this year to speak with our state representatives about our community’s housing needs.

Ari and Jamie also spoke before the Athens City Council in support of a pilot program at the Gathering Place to provide temporary housing for people who are unhoused. Read more here.

Athens County Emergency Warming Center

Starting in the fall of 2025, UCM is hosting the Emergency Warming Center. Check back on our homepage or follow us on Instagram to stay up-to-date on the EWC.

No one should have to face the cold alone. That’s why we will be hosting the emergency warming center (EWC) in partnership with The Gathering Place.

Ari Faber, UCM Executive Director

This is for anyone who might need a warm space to be when temperatures are dangerously cold. When the health department calls a code blue, the center will open.

“Hosting the EWC is about more than providing a warm place to sleep,” said Ari. “It’s about affirming the worth and dignity of every person in our community. When the temperatures drop, our response must rise to meet the need. This effort reminds us that compassion and radical hospitality are what keep Athens truly warm.”
